In the scene where Ralph Garcy (Barry Miller) emotionally talks about the day that Freddie Prinze died, he has a line of dialogue which states "sometimes you didn't want to laugh at him, but you laughed anyway". This particular line was derived from an actual quote taken from a February 4, 1977 New York Times newspaper article entitled "Friends Recall the Freddie Prinze of West 157th Street" written by Joyce Maynard, who wrote a controversial memoir ("At Home In The World") about her relationship with reclusive author J. D. Salinger of "Catcher In The Rye" fame. The original quote ("He always made you laugh. Just to hear him laugh, made you laugh, too") was from an old childhood friend of Prinze named Louis Calderon, and upon using the article for research, was obviously reshaped and adapted by "Fame" screenwriter Christopher Gore so it could be included in the script.
