The Joker was much more central to the storyline in David Ayer's original screenplay. His personality was more layered, much darker and more homicidal. His relationship with Harley could be described as toxic or abusive, more like an obsession than real love, as he spent more time on creating chaos rather than rescuing her. However, in one scene, he would be lying naked on the floor, depressed and longing for Harley, who was to have a budding romance with Deadshot. The Joker also displayed a much more playful sense of black humor, like in a scene where he waits in a judge's bed to interrogate him about Harley's whereabouts. Most of this material was filmed, but later removed during studio-mandated reshoots and re-edits. In the extended cut, the Joker has only twelve minutes of screen time, with fifty lines of dialogue.
