NBC initially conceived Silver Spoons as a series aimed at adults based on the hit film Arturo (1981) sans the ne'er do well alcoholic lead. The Arthur character eventually morphed into Edward Stratton III (Joel Higgins). The show's concept was also retooled after the network decided to make the show a vehicle for then-child actor Ricky Schroder who was under contract with NBC at the time.
