The character of police commissioner James "Jim" Gordon (which is used in the film) is Batman's longest-running supporting character in the comic books. Gordon was introduced back in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939), Batman's first appearance. He has been in near-constant use ever since. His creators named him after James W. "Wildcat" Gordon, the civilian identity of the pulp hero "The Whisperer" (who was first used in 1936).
