Corrado Cattani was partially inspired by Giovanni Falcone, an Italian magistrate who spent most of his professional life trying to overthrow the power of the Sicilian Mafia, and prosecuted the high-profile Maxi Trial. He was murdered in retaliation by the Mafia in 1992, three years after the fictional character Cattani was killed off.
