Christine was originally named Stephanie in the 2007 draft of the screenplay. This would have been a reference to Saint Stephen, who was stoned to death by the Sanhedrin despite being a righteous person. In the movie, despite being a good-natured and well-meaning person, Christine is ultimately grabbed and pulled through a bed of stones on the train tracks into Hades. The 2007 draft also contained an alternate ending which strengthened the role of Stu Rubin. After Stu's unethical behavior costs him his job, he walks out with $20 thousand embezzled from his and Christine's boss, only to be fleeced in a poker game that Stu himself is hosting at his apartment. Then, Stu gets caught by his landlord, who evicts him for gambling. Now homeless, besides being out of work and in debt, Stu encounters Clay's mother, who hires him to murder Christine (strongly disapproving of her as a daughter-in-law) so that it will look like an ordinary mugging. Clay, of course, is not to be touched. Actually, Clay's mom has no intention of paying Stu. She plans to have him arrested as a loose end after the job is done. At the train station, Stu approaches Clay and Christine. When Stu pulls a gun, which Clay recognizes as his own father's, and demands their valuables, Christine gives him what she thinks is the priceless coin. It turns out to be the cursed button from her coat. All of this is suddenly noticed by a passing security guard, whom Stu shoots in panic. Clay attacks him for the gun, which falls to the ground and fires again. This time killing Clay. Distraught, Stu is dragged into Hell just before the police show up. They briefly question the dying guard, while Christine sobs uncontrollably over Clay's body. When asked if she noticed what happened to the "mugger", Chris answers through her tears that they wouldn't believe her if she told them. She has beaten the Lamia curse, but it is a sour triumph. The end credits roll to Alice Cooper's "Hell is Living Without You". All of this was changed in rewrites, although many fans agree that Stu is far more worthy of the titular fate than Christine.
