The Superman design on this show is based on his familiar, well-known, classic design with short hair. At the time the series was in development, Superman's design was slightly revamped in the comics, giving him longer hair that looked like a mullet, and DC Comics was pushing really hard to give him a mullet in this animated series insisting that this was going to be the character's permanent look. However, producer/character designer Bruce Timm resisted updating mullet hair on Superman's animated deign believing the mullet would not last in the comics and Superman would go back to having his classic short hair again. The decision literally had to go all the way up to Bob Daly, the head of Warner Brothers, who ultimately weighed in and decided to side with Timm and go with the classic Superman design. In 1997, Superman's comic design given another change, an extreme overhaul design that closely resembled the designs for Tim Burton's "Superman Lives" movie project with new electric powers and a completely new costume, and split in two beings as Blue and Red Superman. With the movie project going into development hell and the popularity of this series, Superman finally returned to his classic design in 1998.
