Fox launched production on this film hoping to replicate the success of their 1959 hit, Journey to the Center if the Earth. While Journey had a budget of about $3 million and eventually grossed $10 million, Lost World had a much lower budget, and was also far less popular, failing to garner even $2 million at the box office.
