Eli Roth directed the film with the idea that it would get an NC-17 rating, and that he'd have to then pick and choose edits in order to earn an R rating. To his surprise, the MPAA review immediately gave the movie an R without demanding any cuts. Roth did make a few minor edits afterwards but these left the most extreme violence and gore intact.
