This movie is noticeably much darker than the rest of the franchise, and the first one to be rated PG-13 instead of PG (PG-13 was a new MPAA rating which had been introduced one year after Il ritorno dello Jedi (1983) was released), which has continued to be the case with every movie in the Star Wars saga since. Notably, the PG-13 rating is due to the scene towards the end of the movie where Darth Vader's body is badly burned by lava, reducing his body to a crispy state without any hair, while he is hanging towards the edge with no legs and only one arm after losing the climatic duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi.
