Gaston's lynch mob are portrayed as crusader-like in style. While setting out for a murderous campaign, they sing "Praise the Lord" and portray themselves as pious Christians. The real-life Crusaders performed massacres, but their rallying cry was "Deus vult" (Latin for "God wills it").
