Vincent D'Onofrio claimed that he based his performance as Pvt. Pyle on the silent film performances of Lon Chaney, and he was overjoyed when he heard Stanley Kubrick tell him, "I want you to be big. Lon Chaney big," without knowing that D'Onofrio had been studying Chaney's films all along.
