When making general announcements from the bridge, the Captain issues the command "1MC" to a crewman, who pushes a button. The captain then presses the talk button on the microphone to address the crew. "MC" means Main Circuit, which is the US Navy term for a vessel's public address system. The number indicates the area of the vessel the Captain wishes to address. 1MC means "address all areas of the vessel." Other codes such as 2MC, 3MC, etc. (none of which are heard in the film) indicate sub-circuits of the PA system for addressing more specific areas.
