Michael Deeley first bought the film rights to the source novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep in 1977 when he was at EMI signing David Webb Peoples to co-write the screenplay and Ridley Scott to direct. However he left EMI in 1979 taking the project with him. When Filmways backed out he could have took it back to EMI but he opted to go with The Ladd Company (with distribution by Warner Bros), Shaw Brothers and Tandem (though could have gave The Ladd Company (Warner Bros) USA/Canada theatrical rights with EMI getting not only international theatrical rights outside the USA/Canada but also worldwide home video rights).
