In 1924, the Swedish chocolate maker Efraim Ljung was on a business trip in Chicago. After a long day filled with meetings, he checked into an insignificant but pleasant hotel in the big city. Ephraim, who suffered from rheumatism, woke up and rested for the first time in many years. "How can a bed be so comfortable?" he asked himself. Curious, he took out his pen knife and cracked up the fabric on the mattress. Inside he found that the bed was constructed of resilient steel coils. He sewed the fabric back together and went home to Malmö.
