The executioner sent to kill Buckbeak is actually Walden Macnair, who is later revealed in the graveyard scene in Harry Potter e il calice di fuoco (2005) to be one of Voldemort's first Death Eaters. It was explained later by Hagrid, that Macnair was sent to the Giants to try and recruit them for Voldemort (which is why Dumbledore sent Hagrid to talk to them in the beginning of Harry Potter e l'Ordine della Fenice (2007), to keep them from proclaiming loyalty to Voldemort).
