At the time the story takes place, 1938, the French Franc had an exchange value of about 3 cents U.S. The 1-million francs in hush-money that Mr. Peters (Sydney Greenstreet) demanded from Dimitrios therefore would've been the equivalent of around $30,000 if he had exchanged it for U.S. currency. The French Franc was in the process of devaluing further during the 1930s. By 1940, just 2 years later after the story concludes, the franc was worth 2 cents U.S.
