Michael Douglas was initially against Sharon Stone being cast as she was largely unknown, but Paul Verhoeven desperately wanted her since he had been very impressed by her screentest, and her capability to switch between sweet and ruthless in an instant, something she had showcased in his previous movie, Atto di forza (1990).
