As mentioned above, the necessity to adapt the film as two separate movies was prevented by omitting several subplots and characters from the book. Left out of the movie: a chronicle of the murder of Tom Riddle's father and grandparents, something Frank Bryce (the old man in the opening scene) was long suspected of by the Muggle police; Harry's usual summer stay with the Dursleys until he is taken to the Weasley's home, from where they will leave for the Quidditch Championship; in the book, Barty Crouch Jr. is presumed to have died at Azkaban, and the circumstances of his escape are much more complex. These involve both his father Crouch Sr. and his house elf Winky freeing him and trying to keep him hidden. However, the plan backfires when Crouch Jr. escapes from their captivity, and starts using his father for his nefarious ends; although Crouch Jr. (disguised as Mad-Eye Moody) comes very close to being unmasked because Harry's Marauders' Map still identifies him as "Barty Crouch" (fortunately without the "Jr."), he manages to keep his survival a secret until the end of the book; Harry having additional communications and even a few meetings with Sirius Black; several Care of Magical Creatures and Divination classes; a subplot surrounding Rita Skeeter publishing large volumes of secret information, which she obtains by using her unregistered Animagus ability to change into a beetle and listen in on conversations; Hermione starting the SPEW (Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare) in an effort to improve the lives of the House Elves at Hogwarts; a bigger focus on Draco Malfoy's hate campaign aimed at Harry, where he purposely leaks false information to Rita Skeeter; a subplot revolving around Ludo Bagman, a Ministery official who is betting on Harry to win the Triwizard Tournament and is constantly trying to help him accomplish this; Harry's first instance of seeing through Voldemort's eyes, and learning of Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius' Death Eater cousin; a much more elaborate third task, with many more dangers in the maze; Dumbledore explaining that the strange effects seen at Harry and Voldemort's duel are the result of their wands being 'brothers', both containing a feather from the same Phoenix; when the Ministery comes to arrest Crouch Jr., a Dementor immediately performs a 'kiss' on him, rendering him all but braindead. In absence of Crouch's testimony, the Ministery doesn't believe Harry's account of Voldemort's return, leading to an angry fall-out with Dumbledore, who sends Snape and Sirius on a mission to start recruiting wizards to their side; Dumbledore urges Harry to return to the Dursley's, despite having been offered a place at the Weasleys; Draco and his friends threaten Harry with Voldemort's wrath, but Harry's friends support him and drive them off.
