After Bobby-Lynn is eaten by the crocodile, Howard asks Pearl if she was the one Pearl was obsessed with, to which Pearl responds, "You know I don't like blondes." In Pearl (2022), the reasoning behind this is explained when Pearl fails to achieve one of her life's goals of winning a spot with a traveling dance troupe after the talent scouts dismiss her for not emulating the young, "blonde," All-American they had in mind - becoming the catalyst for her sister-in-law Mitsy's demise, after Pearl forces her to acknowledge the scouts chose her (over Pearl) for embodying such attributes (though it is left ambiguous as to whether or not Mitsy actually was chosen or if Pearl simply assumes she was).
