Sean Connery had some problems with the screenplay by Lorenzo Semple Jr. and wanted Tom Mankiewicz on board to help out (Mankiewicz had written Agente 007 - Una cascata di diamanti (1971)). Mankiewicz demurred as he felt he was being disloyal to the official Bond series.
