Before the 1795 storyline was established, Barnabas Collins and his family had a different dynamic regarding both the time period and how certain situations played out. There were many clues, both visually and verbally, to show that Barnabas and his family occupied Collinwood during the early 1820's. A costume party that Barnabas hosted had he, the present-day Collinses, as well as Victoria Winters and Burke Devlin dressed as his relatives in clothing and hairstyles that were worn during that period. His mother Naomi's plaque at the mausoleum stated that she lived from 1761-1821, indicating that she could have died either shortly before or shortly after Barnabas became a vampire, while his father Joshua's plaque stated that he lived from 1755-1830. Josette Collins' tombstone stated that she lived from 1800-1822. While Josette was married to Barnabas' uncle, Jeremiah, as intended, she and Barnabas had feelings for each other, but could not act upon them because of Josette's marriage to Jeremiah. When Barnabas became a vampire, he tried to steal Josette away from Jeremiah and to make her his vampire bride. Josette, horrified at what Barnabas had become, ran from him, with Barnabas in pursuit and, feeling there was no other place to go, jumped to her death from Widows' Hill. Barnabas' aunt Abigail was a very wealthy wife to a pirate and wore plenty of jewelry. While it was established early on that Jeremiah and Joshua were brothers, Jeremiah was actually closer to Joshua in terms of age than to Barnabas and was still alive when Barnabas was chained into his coffin. Barnabas also loathed his middle-aged uncle due to the "fact" that Jeremiah stood between Barnabas' and Josette's happiness (because Jeremiah was married to her) and would have killed him if he was permitted to by time. Barnabas was actually closer to age to his sister, Sarah, being older than her by about as many as six years. However, she died around 9 years of age, as her plaque at the mausoleum stated that she lived from 1786-1796. When the writers decided to do a backstory of Barnabas' transformation from human to vampire (beginning when Victoria Winters is thrust back in time nearly two centuries), they set the storyline toward the end of the calendar year 1795 and, while they kept the basic family structure in place, for the most part, they changed the dynamic of that family by making Abigail a fanatically religious spinster, allowing her to help bring in the equally religious fanatic, Reverend Trask, to hunt and torment Victoria, who was falsely seen by Abigail as a witch. Both Barnabas and Jeremiah were closer in both age and friendship, more like two brothers who adored one another. The producers then added the character of Angelique Bouchard, Barnabas' former lover and Josette's handmaiden, who turned out to be the real witch who went on to be the cause, both directly and indirectly, of the family tragedies during that time period. Josette would arrive in Collinwood to marry Barnabas, but she and Jeremiah would marry under the influence of Angelique's witchcraft, as she wanted Barnabas for herself. Because he did not know that Angelique and her witchcraft was behind this manipulation, Barnabas felt betrayed by both Josette and, more importantly, Jeremiah, breaking the brotherly bond they once shared. Barnabas then challenged Jeremiah to a duel and wounded him, which would turn fatal. Barnabas would then feel remorseful once he discovered the truth.
