Production Designer Christopher Kennedy commented on the filming in Turkey: "Having a genuine context for those scenes was a real gift, but converting them back into a semblance of their 1919 reality was another thing all together, calling for an ambitious but carefully considered approach. Most of the Istanbul locations were available for no more than a day, sometimes only a matter of hours. So it was a kind of 'flash mob' situation, occupying spaces for a very short time, transforming them totally, then vacating them, on occasion all in under an hour."
