Shurik's protest to Ivan the Terrible that he doesn't drink is a reference to his previous appearance in 'Kidnapping, Caucasus Style,' in which he travels to the Caucasus to study toasts. In that film, he at first protests that he doesn't drink, but when he succumbs. his drunkenness drives the films action.
