In Rotta verso l'ignoto (1991), Uhura (to Nichelle Nichols' objections) was unfamiliar with Klingonese during their covert mission into Klingon territory. However, the alternate reality-Uhura is fluent in the language, and able to use the skill while in Klingon space.
