Steven C. Miller wanted the movie to have a "gritty urban look" with authentic-looking mano-y-mano fights captured on camera in real time with the real actors, so it helped tremendously that many of the principal actors are former athletes and stunt performers. Gina Carano is a former Women's MMA champion and internationally ranked Muay Thai champion; Dan Bilzerian had previously trained as a Navy SEAL; and Joshua Mikel had performed stunts for films and television series.
