Although originally set to appear in every episode of the first season, the recurring character of Smitty was dropped from the series after only three episodes when critics and sponsors, including chemical giant Monsanto, complained that the character made the show too oriented towards children. A review in "Variety" a week after the show's debut described it as "almost strictly kideo [sic] fare." Producer Roy Huggins said he was hired during Season 1 to change that. His first act was to drop the sidekick Smitty, helping change Cheyenne into a somewhat laconic lone drifter.
