Ron Howard has stated that the original inspiration for the show came from Gary Marshall's reaction to "Summer of '42". This influence can be observed in the pilots first scene in Richie's bedroom where Potsie tries to mentor Richie in how to get girls much like Oscy councils Hermie. The bumpy ride from the pilot, "New Family in Town", to the "Love American Style" episode: "Love and the Happy Days", and eventually "American Graffiti"s hit status, gave the series its final form.
