Liam Neeson and Timothy Dalton were both considered for the role of Mufasa, but later turned it down, though Neeson would later voice a lion in Le cronache di Narnia - Il leone, la strega e l'armadio (2005) and its sequels and Dalton would later have a role in a Disney film in Toy Story 3 (2010) and Toy Story 4 (2019).
