Chris Tucker, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, and Larenz Tate were considered for the role of Lee Butters. Tucker would eventually go on to play a similar wisecracking detective along with Jackie Chan (who was also considered for this film) in their own buddy cop film, starting with Rush Hour - Due mine vaganti (1998), also released the same year as this film.
