Russell's appearance was based on Korean-American Pixar employee Peter Sohn, who was a storyboard artist on the film. The employees at Pixar draw each other during meetings for fun, and a cartoon of Sohn was used as the model for Russell. Sohn also voiced Russell in the video short George and A.J. (2009).
