At the beginning, many British soldiers are either sleeping or sitting around in the trenches. Millions of men were killed or wounded in action, but most soldiers in the trenches saw little to no action. Defending was easier than attacking as both the British/French and Germans tried to break the deadlock, which took a few years. Typically, soldiers cleaned the trenches, fixed barbed wire, wrote letters home, and tried to sleep whenever possible. Boredom was common on the Western Front.
