A few scenes involve Dewey Cox having conversations with the spirit of his dead brother, Nate, and finding that Nate has grown older even though he died as a boy. In "Cash: The Autobiography", the basis for Quando l'amore brucia l'anima (2005), Johnny Cash wrote about his struggle to cope with his older brother, Jack's, accidental death. He said he routinely spoke with Jack into his own adult years, and that Jack's spirit got older as Cash aged, always remaining two years older than Johnny.
