The film is dark and frightening. It was done to make the film different from Il mago di Oz (1939) and make it darker, scarier, and less colorful, and make it a much darker experience for Dorothy and for the viewers. The film's darker tone follows other 1980's sequels like L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980) and Star Trek II - L'ira di Khan (1982) which were darker in tone than their predecessors.
