In the end of the film, Mia becomes the queen of Genovia, though in the novel series the monarch of Genovia uses the title prince or princess, similar to real-life monarchs in principalities like Monaco, Liechtenstein, and Andorra. This allowed the book series to continue being called 'The Princess Diaries' after Mia assumed the throne.
