Kevin Smith, being a big fan of Arrested Development - Ti presento i miei (2003), wanted David Cross to play the role of the Hobbit Lover. Cross showed interest, but had to decline due to scheduling conflicts. Based on a suggestion from producer Scott Mosier's wife, Smith and Mosier offered Kevin Weisman the role and he accepted.
