Since the events depicted here, the journalist Sacha Pfeiffer (played by Rachel McAdams in this movie) has alternated between jobs at National Public Radio and the Boston Globe, always continuing to cover clerical abuse stories (among other beats). On July 29, 2021, on the NPR news program All Things Considered, Pfeiffer reported that (through a quirk in statute of limitations laws) the 91-year-old ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick was being charged with sexually assaulting a teenager in the 1970s, making him the the highest-ranking US Catholic Church official to face criminal charges for clergy sexual abuse. In the course of the NPR report, Pfeiffer interviewed the victim's Boston lawyer, Mitchell Garabedian--the same crusading lawyer portrayed by Stanley Tucci in the film Spotlight. Early in the movie, the character of Pfeiffer has a line of dialogue about Garabedian: "I only interviewed him once. He's kind of a character."
