While Hwang Dong-hyuk originally came up for the rough structure of the show back in 2008, in 2014 Takashi Miike released a Japanese Movie titled As the Gods Will (2014). Translating to As the Gods Will, the extremely graphic film contains a similar story line which features a group of contestants participating in a series of children's games where losing results in their death.
