When Batman calls Harley Quinn a psychopath, she vehemently objects and says she is in fact a sociopath. According to the most basic definitions of the terms, Harley is correct. Sociopaths frequently have emotional outbursts, lack self-control, form attachments to other people, and disregard societal norms. Moreover, these behaviors are often triggered by traumatic personal relationships or a history of abuse, which completely describes Harley. Conversely, psychopaths are highly manipulative and can gain the trust of others, but they do not form attachments to other people. They also lack empathy and have no remorse about hurting other people; it's the Joker who is a textbook psychopath. That Batman fails to accurately characterize Harley's disorder seems odd given his years of studying criminal behavior and the fact he is generally considered among the most intelligent individuals in the DC universe.
