Uhtred is shown with the West Saxons (though caged) during the Battle of Aesc's Dun (Ashdown, Berkshire) where King Aethelred is mortally wounded. In the books however, Uhtred is fighting on the side of the Danes and witnesses the death of the king from the Danish front line. This was Uhtred's first battle.
