During production, Ingmar Bergman's own love life mirrored some of this film's mixed-romance bedroom farce. Bergman's relationship with Harriet Andersson was coming to an unhappy end, and he had already secretly began an affair with Bibi Andersson. Fitting the farcical tone of the film, Bergman had given his new lover, Bibi Andersson, a small part in the film and both Anderssons briefly shared a scene during the Stockholm stage scene.
