Series producer Michael Jacobs said that when he proposed to ABC to end the series with the suggestion that all the characters die in a mass extinction event, they balked at first. It wasn't until Jacobs told them "it's not the cast that we are trying to destroy, it's the entire world. My source for doing this is history!" that ABC relented.
