Sir Ian McKellen enjoyed playing Gandalf the Grey more than his transformed state (Gandalf the White) in the next two movies. Fortunately, McKellen got to repeat the role in the prequel-trilogy The Hobbit, where he played Gandalf the Grey in the three movies.
