The original director was Miller Drake, Roger Corman's head of post-production who had been suggested for the job by producer Jeff Schechtman. Drake proposed to bring back Kevin McCarthy from Piranha (1978), completely mutilated from the events of that film, and creating flying piranhas out of some sort of revenge. He met with producer Ovidio G. Assonitis to discuss the film, but after a tense meeting, he learned from Schectman two days later that Assonitis had him fired and replaced by James Cameron.
