Hal Moore is a Lieutenant Colonel during the battle signified by the silver oak leaf on his helmet and collar. Though not mentioned in the film, if you look closely you can see a silver eagle on his collar when he returns home after his tour. This indicates that at some point after the battle he was promoted to a "full bird" Colonel. Hal Moore would retire as a (3-star) Lieutenant General.
