In season one, episode four, "Dead Man Dating", Mark (John Cho) says that according to Chinese mythology, if a proper burial isn't provided to the body, Yama drags him to Hell (really to Di Yu). In the episode, we see Yama riding a horse. However, in the Hindu religion, Yama rides on a buffalo, and sends the souls to Heaven or Hell based on their deeds. Of course, most Chinese are Buddhists. In that, Yama is part of the Buddhist concept of Naraka, combined with local afterlife beliefs. Incorporating ideas from Taoism and Buddhism as well as traditional religion in China, Di Yu is a kind of purgatory place which serves not only to punish but also to renew spirits ready for their next incarnation.
