Deborah Davis originally wrote the script under the title "Balance of Power". The film-makers later decided on a change of title, and read Sarah Churchill's own memoirs, "Accounts Of The Conduct Of Sarah, Duchess Of Marlborough, 1704-1742" for inspiration. They compiled a list of key words and phrases used by Sarah in the book, from which producer Ceci Dempsey suggested "The Favourite", an idea approved by Yorgos Lanthimos.
