In the scenes after Sam's grandmother dies, some aspects of Jewish mourning rituals are depicted in the movie, but they go mostly unexplained and may be unfamiliar to non-Jewish audiences. Uncle Boris tears his T-shirt in the throes of grief; though Sam tells him to stop, it is a basic aspect of Jewish mourning practice that one tears or cuts an article of clothing (or affixes a torn ribbon to one's clothes). That torn clothing or ribbon should be worn throughout the entire "Shiva" period, the first seven days of mourning after the loved one's death. This is also why Boris tells Sam to tear his own pocket. Likewise, when Boris chooses to sleep on the floor, he is referring to another Shiva practice: the tradition that bereaved family members are supposed to sit low to the ground for the first seven days to remember the deceased. This practice comes from the Book of Job and symbolizes being "brought low" by grief.
