In an attempt to quickly establish a DC Cinematic Universe, the movie was fast-tracked to be released in between Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), so writer/director David Ayer had only six weeks to write the screenplay and do casting sessions. Early footage that was leaked online (originally intended for Comic Con) revealed a much darker and more serious product. However, in the wake of the disappointing reception of Batman v Superman, Warner Bros. reportedly got cold feet, so reshoots and re-edits were ordered to add much more comedic elements and musical hits, akin to Guardiani della Galassia (2014) and Deadpool (2016). Ayer has stated that this 'studio cut' was not his version; it was "beaten into a comedy" which left out many elements: it was meant to open with Enchantress returning to the world and be in alliance with Darkseid, so her machine would incorporate a Boom Tube (portal) too. Joker and Harley had much more scenes together: after he drops Harley from the helicopter and it crashes, he would make a deal with Enchantress, in return for not interfering with her plans. He tries to take Harley home and be "King of Gotham", but Harley stands up to him and refuses to betray her new friends. The Squad then turns on the Joker and he escapes. Katana would then be possessed by Enchantress and attack the Squad. Diablo originally survived and Harley and Deadshot eventually hooked up. Ayer later stated that his original version wasn't a rough cut but "a fully mature edit", which was "amazing, [an] intricate and emotional journey with some "bad people" who are shit on and discarded in, [..] with not a single radio song in the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid 3rd Act resolution."
