The boy in the general store was played by Ed Shaw. Shaw had appeared as an extremely congenial contestant on the game show You Bet Your Life (1950) about a year before this and during the on-air interview by host Groucho Marx he professed his desire to become an actor. He was cast in this, his first film, shortly afterwards. You Bet Your Life has another actor connection with Rutledge director John Ford. Frequent Ford actor John Wayne was watching the show one night when a guest was the unintentionally riotous Latino named Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez. Wayne was so amused that he contacted the show and had him sign on in the part of a bartender in an upcoming western. He did so well that he would become one of Wayne's Batjac Productions stock players. The fellow's son, Clifton Collins Jr., would later make his mark in movies.
